This idea of underselling the brand made it to the final stages before the whole campaign was changed to a clip-based promo and poster campaign without a tagline.

Don't think it would get past Ofcom, but I think it speaks volumes!

These two were intended to be part of a series of posters - each of the main characters having their own.

PROMOS

Telling it like it is - Teaser (Shoot)

Don sits on an armchair and stares directly and unemotionally into camera cigarette in hand.

Don

If you don’t like what’s being said,

change the conversation.

If you don't like what's being shown,

then change the channel.

But remember...

Don reaches to the side, picks up a glass of whisky and takes a large gulp.

Don

(dark/menacing)

Don't fool yourself.

(beat)

This is some very dirty business.

Music – Middle 8 instrumental section of the classic Sinatra version of I Got You Under My Skin

Shots of individual cast members who are being kept inside large person-sized bird cages. They all look pissed off.

VO:

It’s dark

It’s sexy

It’s smart

It’s gripping.

And Sky Atlantic has got its hands on it…

As the music ‘explodes’, the doors to the cages spring open and the characters – in their own fashion (Don – suave, Joan - flirty, Betty - sexy – Pete – smarmy, etc) smile.

VO:

As we travel through a smoky 60s bar (with ubiquitous 60s mise-en-scene/paraphernalia), we pass each of the characters all posed in a classic image of the era:

Don as Bond (Connery - obviously) across from Bert Cooper as Dr No

Look over at…Betty as Christine Keeler (on the chair)

Roger and Joan as the Avengers (Steed and Emma Peel)

Peggy as ‘Marilyn’

Pete as US Astronaut

Over this we hear famous soundbites of the era;

'I have a dream'

'Think not what you country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’

'Turn on, tune in, drop out'

'Everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes'

'One Small Step for man, a giant step for mankind’

VO:

Mad Men - ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ (Shoot)

Music in Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nilsson

Don in his finest suit, trilby, and cigarette in mouth walks through a bar.

He walks past all the icons (lookalikes – obviously) of the 60s – John Lennon, Dylan, Hendrix, Jagger, The Kennedys, Nixon, Kruschev, Marilyn, Neil Armstrong (or just US astronaut), Che Guevara, Martin Luther King Jr.

Don just eases by them all, ignoring them as they make way for him and treat him with reverence.

He gets to the bar, removes his hat and casually orders a drink. He looks around the room at all the icons staring at him and, without missing a beat, picks up his drink, laughs to himself and shakes his head before downing the drink in one.

He stares straight into the camera, cool as a cucumber (yes, I said cucumber), as all the icons in the background talk amongst themselves about him.

VO:

Everyone who’s anyone is talking about the best thing on tv.
